Our bodies get dehydrated more in summers than during normal days (other seasons of the year). More so children, who get dehydrated at a faster rate as they are physically more active.

We forget to rehydrate our body which can lead to many health issues. One of the most common problems seen in children is the urinary tract infection (UTI), or burning sensation while urinating.
Kids, generally, tend to drink less water in a rush to play or do something. If you have noticed, they just take a sip or two after food and run away. Similar behavior can be observed even when they are thirsty – they just wet their mouth by having 2-3 sips or gulps of water and, hence, do not drink the adequate quantity required by their body during hot weather conditions.
Even if we make them drink water forcefully, they will repeat the same mistake – drink a few sips of water. That isn’t enough.
What can we do to solve this problem?
Here are few smart ideas that you can try with you little ones (as indeed the whole family):
- Lemonade:
- Take 2-3 fresh lemons
- Squeeze the entire juice out of them into a bowl/tumbler of water (about 1 liter)
- Add salt and sugar to taste (normally 1 tsp each), and stir it until you see that the salt and sugar have fully dissolved in the water
- Lemonade is ready!
- You can even ask them to lend a helping hand in making it – just to make it interesting enough for them
Benefits
Drink a lemonade help to rehydrate your body as well as in retaining electrolytes. The Vitamin-C also helps in flushing out the toxins from the body, if any. There is no restriction of quantity and frequency; just make sure you give them a lemonade only after they have had their food as drinking lemonade frequently may give a feeling of satiety and, thus, they may refuse food intake.
- Chilled coconut water
Children love to have coconut water. More so if it is chilled. They can have it 3 – 4 times a day (one whole coconut water each time).
Benefits: Coconut water provides some essential electrolytes and minerals to the body.
- Fruit Juices
Children are picky eaters; especially when it comes to eating fruits. A good-old yet effective way to give them the benefits of fruits is by having them drink fresh fruit juices. They can have 1-2 glass/day alwaysbefore sunset.
Benefits: If they love to eat whole-fruits – nothing like it, as they will benefit by retaining more of fiber.
- Buttermilk
Here’s how you can make it more attractive to the kids and tasty as well.
- Take one glass of freshly made buttermilk
- Add a pinch each of black salt, jeera powder (cumin), ajwain (carom seeds) powder, and few finely chopped coriander leaves
- Or, you can add all the ingredients and blend it
- One can have 3-4 glasses/day
Benefits: This will help in digestion, rehydration, as well as act as a pro-biotic for your gut.
Lukewarm water:
Make sure your child drinks lukewarm water every 15-20 minutes throughout the day until they have the feeling of a dry mouth or are thirsty – this can be noticed at the end of the day mostly, or next day or may take more time.
Benefits: The feeling of dry mouth or thirst is an indication that your lymphatic system got detoxified. People of all age groups can do this.
The above remedies are multiple options one can follow, especially for kids to beat the effects of hot weathers, get relief from UTI pains, as well as if one is feeling dehydrated.
